WHAT YOU HEARD FROM THE BEGINNING
1 John 2:24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us eternal life. 26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie just as it has taught you, abide in him.
John reminds us in 1 John 2:24 "Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you". The meaning of the word "let" is to allow, not prevent, the meaning of the word "heard" according to Strongs Greek #191 is to come (to the ears), be reported, understand. Then he says "If what we heard from the beginning abides in us", the meaning of the word "abide" according to Strongs Greek #3306 to stay, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry. So then verse 24 states for us to allow, not prevent what came to us, or what we were made aware of, what was reported to us and what we had understood, form the beginning, and "If" what we "heard" understood "from the beginning" remains or stays within us "then" we will "abide" remain or stay "in the Son and in the Father".
So what is it that we heard from the beginning? What does scripture say we head and understood, what is it that came to our ears from the beginning? 1 John 1:7 Beloved I am writing to you no new commandment, but what you heard from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. Scripture tells us in 1 John 3:11 For this is the message that we heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
John also writes in 2 John 1:4-6 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
So John was rejoiced to find that some of the children (new believers) were "walking in the truth" and this was commanded by the Father. John also says this is not a new commandment but one they had heard from the beginning 2 John 1:5 And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another.
John explains what love is according to scripture by the Father 2 John 1:6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning so that you should walk in it. And John reminds us what we have heard long ago, then reminds us what we are to do as the Father commanded, 2 John 1:6 "just as you have heard from the beginning so that you should walk in it." Walk in truth as the Father commanded us to do from the beginning, walking in truth and love for one another is walking according to His commandments. What is truth? Psalms 119:142 Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law (Torah) is truth.
So love is walking according to the Fathers commandments, 1 John 1:4 "walking in the truth" this is not our way but His way, not our definition of what love is, it is what Yahovah the Father says what love is and how to love one another, this is what we have heard from the beginning, what has been taught from the beginning and what His people have understood long ago. They were made aware of from the beginning and it's not a new commandment but one of old from long ago to Yahovah's people Israel.
This is just one scripture of many that show the commandment from old is the same as in the new testament, there were no new commandments taught, but the same as what they heard from the beginning.
Joshua 22:5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD (Yahovah) charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Does Yahovah (the Father) say that he loves us if we keep His commandments?
Exodus 20:6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 5:10 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that Yahovah your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations,
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenants, you shall be my treasured possession among all the peoples , for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people Israel."
So I think that this verse in 1 John 5:2-3 says it plain and simple, so simple even we can even understand it.
1 John 5:2-3 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey His commandments 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. and His commandments are not burdensome.
As followers of Yeshua Messiah if we are to remain in Him and remain in the Father, we need to walk in truth and love according to how the Father and Yeshua define truth and love by scripture; that is walking in truth keeping the instruction on how he wants us to live, "keeping Torah" and keeping His commandments and keeping His ways according to His Torah of instructions in the scripture. By knowing His Law (Torah) it keeps us from NOT creating our made up version of what walking in truth and love is. Only His ways are true and holy and for practicing righteousness. His ways and His commandments produce real love to Him and for one another and is how He instructs us to do walk in it.
What is walking in the truth? Psalms 1:1-2 Blessed is the man who's walk is not in the council of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law (Torah) of Yahovah (The LORD), and on His law (Torah) he meditates day and night.
Law in the Hebrew meaning is "Torah", according to Stongs Hebrew #8451 Torah defined as "direction, instruction, law" this is the direction instruction from Yahovah that we have heard from the beginning and it's not a new commandment it is what we have heard from the beginning.
